  2. Actually, that's not any more realistic than optimistic atheism. If atheism is correct, we are all just machines and nothing that we do has any meaning or moral content. Smash a computer or smash a human, it's all the same...just parts in different arrangements. Optimism and pessimism are just two different programs running on that hardware we call humans and neither is intrinsically better than the other.

    If an atheist wants to be a pessimist or optimist, he has to at least upgrade his beliefs to deism and the god of the philosophers, since then there is a (possibly mortal) soul in a mechanistic universe that has effectively been abandoned by God.

  3. The purpose of life is simply to avoid becoming lunch for as long as possible. There isn't any more to it than that.
